Stories sell

As an artist, one is always looking for ways to get people to experience your art and maybe even buy it. However, the grand majority of artists don’t know jack about marketing or sales, and so their website tells a story something like this:

“I am an artist. This is what I make. Would you like to buy it?”

The fantastic book, All Marketers are liars tell storiesby Seth Godin does a fantastic job of explaining storytelling in the art of marketing and sales.

Hugh MacLeod is an example of an artist that tells a great story! He has a great manifesto here giving you ways to be creative. His story goes something like this:

“I am an artist. I draw cartoons. I draw cartoons that inspire people. They are social objects, and give people a reason to talk to each other. I also love marketing and business. I use marketing and business as a canvas for my art. You can see my cartoons on a business card, or in a cubicle. Or get them for free in your email every single day.”

Guess what? He makes money on his cartoons. He writes books, sells posters, creates drawings that accompany books, and all kinds of stuff you can imagine!

So the lesson is to 1. Be the best in the world at something, 2. Learn marketing or hire someone to market for you, and 3. COPY SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS MODELS! If this guy offers a lot of his work FOR FREE it is because IT WORKS. The internet is not the grocery store where people take their free sample and leave. When you have someone’s attention on the internet you are multiplying the chances that this person will at some point want to buy something from you. Especially if they keep coming back for more!

What is it with all this stuff?

I ran into the blog for uncrate. It is full of pictures of very awesome stuff. Beautiful stuff. Some of it is very useful. But It was A LOT OF STUFF!! It is a place where you can find the latest stuff that comes out. Their motto is: Stuff you never knew you wanted.

What if we could create an equally successful blog about stuff you never knew you could become, do, or accomplish?

What if instead of buying stuff we start doing stuff in order to become stuff?

I can explain the key to my success in one sentence. It’s very easy to understand, but incredibly hard to implement:

I wasn’t afraid to be honest in my writing, exposing both the good AND the bad about myself in an authentic, raw and compelling way.

Do that thing–be painfully honest–and you’ll get there, because no one else does it. Everyone in the world is a liar, whether its to themselves or to everyone else, they’re all full of shit. If you have the courage to tell the truth, to open your soul to the world, even a little bit, the world will stop and look.

If you’re lacking confidence, remember–no one predicted I’d become “Tucker Max.” What your life is and who you become is ultimately up to you.

Zombie time…

You ever go on the computer to look at just one thing and then end up spending two hours of your time looking at random stuff? My future wife calls it zombie time. Time when you just wonder aimlessly on the Internet going from link to link like stream of consciousness.

I love zombie time but only when I plan ahead when I’m going to do it. Otherwise my whole day can be taken out just doing a few errands!!

Sam had a great quote the other day: “Tell your time where to go instead of wondering where it went.”

More awesomeness from Seth Godin on making a living as a musician!

Where are you on the bell curve? I can tell you where most people are.

Where are you on the bell curve? I can tell you where most people are.

Attain your dreams, or die trying!

“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.”
